John Flamsteed

John Flamsteed FRS (1646 – 1719) portrayed in a stone bust set in Herstmonceux Castle gardens. A brass plaque at the base of the sculpture reads: ‘John Flamsteed, First Astronomer Royal, Established, The Royal Observatory, at Greenwich, in 1675’. On the lower edge of the stone bust, the sculptor’s name carved in the stone, reads: ‘G. Elliott sculpt.’ The stone bust was unveiled in 1975 as part of the three-hundredth anniversary of the Royal Greenwich Observatory. Also, the tercentenary sundial, can be partly seen behind. From 1957 to 1988, these grounds were the home of the Royal Observatory, Greenwich. Since 1994, it has been used by the Bader International Study Centre of Queen's University, Canada.
