Susan Young

Susan Young, artist, animation, auteur filmmaker working on a film “Vande Matram” for India celebrating 50 Years of Independence. South Bank, London, UK, 1997

Susan Young working in her London studio 1997; where I worked on my last rostrum camera job for her before leaving for Warner Bros, in LA. I remember her saying: "Richard do not sign on the dotted line!". Susan Young is an incredible artist and very different to work with than I was used to in animation. She works more like a jazz instrumentalist improvising and I found myself adapting to that naturally. I would just improvise effects in the spirit of her film, with the rostrum film camera, and there was a high chance the camerawork was incorporated into the piece she was creating. It was the only time I worked with the talented Susan Young, but it left an impression on me. The rostrum camera was on the way out, being overtaken by new digital techniques, so it was nice to pay tribute to the instrument in one final gig.
