Chad Varah

Chad Varah (1911 – 2007), founder of the Samaritans, at the church of St Stephen Walbrook in the City of London, where he was rector from 1953 until his retirement in 2003 at the age of 92. The Rev Chad Varah founded the non-religious telephone counselling organisation the Samaritans, which now has over 187 branches and 22,000 volunteers, the first telephone help line for those in social and psychological need.
