Carcassonne is known for its role in the Albigensian Crusade or Cathar Wars initiated by Pope Innocent III to establish his authority by eradicating Catharism and gain land for the French King. La Cité de Carcassonne was a stronghold of Occitan Cathars, who held different religious views from the Roman papacy, that regarded Catharism, Albigenses as a heresy.
