Mike Stuart THE WALL

Camera tests for black background with Flowers Sequence / Scene, animated by Michael Stuart, rendering by Jill Brooks, directed by Gerald Scarfe. "THE WALL" performed by Pink Floyd. Camera tests Richard Wolff 13/12/1979

This is one of the most powerful scenes I ever shot as a cameraman in animation. It looks pretty, with two beautifully rendered flowers, but, in the hands of Michael Stewart, with Roger Waters / Pink Floyd’s music it is poignant, moving and beyond strong. Later, when the Pink Floyd stage show was adapted into a film, directed by Alan Parker, I read that he said that Mike Stewart’s animation, made his, Alan Parker’s, efforts look tame, by comparison, which is saying something. The concert's visual film work, as well as the feature film which I did not work on, totally broke the typecast, that animation was for young kids. rkw
