Bombeiros do Estado

Bombeiros do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, these Brazilian fire-fighters on their day off visiting Cristo Redentor, Christ the Redeemer. The concrete and soapstone statue is 38 metres (120 foot) high on the peak of the 700 metres (2,300 ft) Corcovado mountain in the Tijuca Forest, overlooking Rio de Janeiro. The local engineer Heitor da Silva Costa made the initial designs of the statue, while the visual artist Carlos Oswald did the final design work for the statue which was then sculpted by Frenchman Paul Landowski, creating the largest art deco sculpture in the world completed in 1931.
